The countdown for the Asia Cup 2025 has officially begun, with the tournament set to kick off on 9th September in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Under the leadership of Suryakumar Yadav, Team India will aim to clinch the prestigious title, with Shubman Gill serving as vice-captain.
India has been drawn into Group A alongside Pakistan, UAE, and Oman. Their campaign will begin on 10th September against the UAE. The squad features a mix of seasoned stars like Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah, alongside exciting youngsters such as Abhishek Sharma.
Sehwag Names His Top Three
Former India opener Virender Sehwag, in conversation with Sony Sports, named the three players he believes could be India’s game-changers in the Asia Cup:
- Jasprit Bumrah – India’s pace spearhead and a proven match-winner.
- Abhishek Sharma – the young left-hander who has shown explosive batting form.
- Varun Chakaravarthy – the mystery spinner who has already impressed in global tournaments.
Interestingly, Sehwag left out vice-captain Shubman Gill from his list.
“I believe Abhishek Sharma can prove to be a game-changer. Bumrah has always been known for changing matches with his bowling. Varun, with his mystery spin, can single-handedly win matches for India,” Sehwag said.
On Workload Management
Sehwag also stressed the importance of workload management, especially for fast bowlers:
“For batters, workload isn’t a big issue, but for bowlers—particularly fast bowlers—proper management is very important. If handled well, they can serve India for a long time. Their fitness is critical for big tournaments like the Asia Cup or World Cup.”
With the stage set and legends already weighing in, India’s performance in the UAE will be under the spotlight as fans count down the days to the first ball.
